About Hijra:
Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid (HIJRA) is an international African humanitarian and development organization that positively contributes towards improving the living standards and conditions of those adversely affected by disasters and conflict in the Horn, East & Central Africa by implementing WASH, Health, Education, Livelihoods, Community service & development and Protection programs in the region for a period of more than 20 years.

HIJRA with funding from the UNHCR in Uganda is implementing a multi-Sectoral Program for refugees Oruchinga settlement (Isingiro district) and Nyakabande Transit Center (Kisoro district) during the period January to December 2014. HIJRA, in a strategy to expand existing program implementing team, is now seeking for qualified person willing to offer Humanitarian services in the following area;

Job Summary: The Sanitation & Hygiene Assistant will be responsible for general assessment of sanitation & hygiene practices in the whole settlement, sensitization of communities on the best sanitation & hygiene practices through routine home visits and imparting community approaches geared towards health & hygiene through Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transition (PHAST) and Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approaches.



Key Duties
Carry out periodic community assessment on sanitation and hygiene practices to identify areas for interventions.
Mobilization, routine home visits and sensitization of communities to participate in sanitation development activities.
Knowledgeable on community approach/methodologies related to health and hygiene for example PHAST and CLTS.
Collect and enter data into UNHCR report card which is done monthly and site fact sheet that is done bi-annual and conducting KAP survey.
Actively participate in development and dissemination of appropriate IEC materials on good sanitation is effectively passed on to communities.
Responsible for the preparation of periodic WASH reports for Oruchinga in line with the Sector monitoring & evaluation strategy
Extension of guidance and technical support to hygiene promoters on WASH activities
Conducting health promotions in institutions.

Qualifications,
The applicant should hold a degree in Public Health

Skills and Experience:
A minimum of two years’ experience in a relevant field, an experience in a refugee settlement camp or in IDP camp will be an added advantage
Possess the ability to speak more than one indigenous and foreign language would be desirable
Proven ability to deal with multiple tasks in a courteous and service-oriented manner in a demanding working condition that often has short deadlines
Ability and willingness to learn
Excellent organizational skills and ability to work under pressure
Excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal and negotiations skills to deal with persons of various cultural and educational backgrounds
Ability to work in any kind of environment
Very strong community mobilisation skills and the ability to effectively communicate key issues to communities
Highly sociable and open minded and reliable
Ability to work with minimum supervision
Be a good team player with service oriented attitude
Strive to live up to high ethical and professional standards
Computer literacy skills i.e. Proficiency in basic computer software e.g. MS Access, excel, PowerPoint, word, etc.
Possess the ability to present concise reports, even at short notice
Ability to identify problems, analyse and provide solutions
Ability to conduct training and capacity building
