Job Summary: The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for the implementation and further development of the GWI EA Regional Communications Strategy.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Contributing to the development and implementation of the GWI EA Regional Communications Strategy.
Overseeing and updating GWI EA website on a regular basis and ensuring we maximize the impact of our work through effective use of networking and social media
Building and mentoring working relationships with local, national and regional print, broadcast and online media and support other staff members based in Tanzania and Ethiopia to do the same
Managing the development of all written outputs for publication both in hard copy and, where necessary, soft copy only, for posting on the GWI EA website
Working in close collaboration with and alongside other media producers and consultants engaged from time to time on the program, whether local, national or international
Actively engaging in program activities at all levels and providing communications outputs for both internal and external use, including managing and developing our blog, Twitter account and YouTube, Vimeo outputs, etc
Ensuring consistency of all GWI EA communication outputs with Care Programme quality guidelines, Care International specifications and Howard G Buffett Foundation communication guidelines, where applicable
Regularly contributing to relevant newsletters to promote prominence of issues relating to Water for Agriculture in EA

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
The Communications Coordinator for the Global Water Initiative East Africa (GWI EA) must possess a Masters degree or higher in Journalism, Mass Communications or other related social science (preferably with additional work experience in the media, if the latter);
Extensive exposure and experience will be accepted in lieu of a Masters qualification for the right candidate
Additional professional qualification in journalism, new media and television and/or radio production (desirable)
At least three to five years’ experience since graduation in communications activities, preferably with a focus on development issues
Prior experience of living and working in Uganda and/or other East African countries and advantage
Working knowledge of agricultural and rural development issues, with a specific gender focus in East Africa is desirable
Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written English and an ability to communicate effectively at all levels – from local communities to international events
Past experience of communications for advocacy campaigns is desirable
Computer proficiency in standard software packages, plus skills in desktop publishing, multimedia and web management, editing and proofreading (a sharp eye for detail and a good design sense are desirable); knowledge of Wordpress is a plus
Demonstrable team-working skills and a firm commitment to gender equality, sensitivity to HIV/AIDS, conceptual understanding of participatory approaches and sustainable development are required
Working knowledge of any additional East African language beyond would be an advantage
Ability to live and work in Uganda
