LABORATORY INFORMATICS OFFICER
Main purpose:The position cuts across the Information and Laboratory Units. The incumbent is charged with operating and supporting users of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) within the UVRI laboratories as well as the laboratories of implementing partners. The LIMS helps the Lab keep track of biological specimen received and processed in the UVRI Laboratory as well as keeping track of lab test results.
Key duties and responsibilities:
Offers informatics expertise in the accessioning and repository section of the laboratory, using LIMs to achieve this.
Using functionality available in the LIMS and custom queries’, incumbent assists lab staff track specimens from the point of accessioning to the point of archival or disposal.
Train lab staff in the proper use of the accessioning and repository modules of the LIMS as well as supervising visiting technicians when operating the LIMS.
Receives and accessions specimens into the LIMS including monitoring safe practice in specimen handling and reporting lapses to lab section heads.
Ensure samples accessioned in the lab system are properly labelled and correctly assigned to the different lab modules/sections basing on test request.
Communicates regularly with project staff at various sites on data issues.
Travels to data collection sites to check on data collection procedures.
Resolves data entry errors using double entry algorithms and data cleaning techniques.
Responsible for storage/archiving of collection instruments after data cleaning.
Processes test request data to generate required aliquot information, print bar-coded labels and labels aliquots after specimen processing.
Stores and retrieves specimens from the laboratory’s Central Repository.
Requirement:
A university degree in Business Administration, SWSA, Commerce or related discipline.
A Bachelors Degree in Statistics/IT/Computer Science.
Experience in working in biomedical institution
