The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) has signed an MoU with the U.S Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to strengthen Institute capacity through the management and coordination of laboratory surveillance, epidemiology, public health evaluations and training in Uganda under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Under this cooperation, UVRI intends to recruit the following personnel on a one year .contract to be renewed depending on availability of funds. All positions are based at Entebbe.Main Purpose of the Job
To conduct quality control and other HIV associated tests in line with the mandate of the HIV National Reference Laboratory and also provide laboratory quality assurance support to HIV testing sites. (4 posts)
Perform assays in the HIV Drug Resistance National I Reference Laboratory as directed by the Scientist and Laboratory Director
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in development of laboratory s standard operating procedures
Preparation of HIV proficiency testing panels
Distribute HIV proficiency testing panels to testing sites
Provide standard operating procedures to testing sites
Collect quality control specimens from testing sites
Register and store specimens in easily retrievable manner until required for retesting
Keep updated inventories of all specimens in the repository using a user friendly archival software
Take measures to ensure that aliquots of tested specimens are properly stored, minimising freezing and thawing
Timely maintenance of the cold chain system
Review the test results with the Laboratory Technologist before forwarding them for data entry, management and analysis
Carry out quality control tests on sentinel surveillance and national HIV Sero- Behavioaral Surveys samples
Carry out support supervision of HIV testing sites
Compile needs of testing centres for providing quality HIV test results
Participate in carrying out training at the testing sites
Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be assigned by the Laboratory Technologist or Laboratory Manager.
Requirement:
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.
Registered with the Allied Health Professional Council.
2 years of working experience in a biomedical laboratory and /or in an HIV drug resistance laboratory. The experience should have included quality control responsibilities.
Experience in sample processing, storage and retrieval for molecular work;
RNA extractions and sequencing is essential for the position in the HIV drug resistance laboratory.
Knowledge of MS office packages including Excel.
