Job Summary: The Corporate Banking Director is responsible for the strategy and lead on the execution of required activities to become the pre-eminent commercial bank across the African continent. S/he will also ensure synergies are met in line with the integration of ABSA group and Barclays globally. Lead within the business as part of the local country management committee (exco).
Major Roles
Lead relationships with multi-nationals, Development Banks, and Major NGOs within Country
Act as the Corporate and Business Bank face to the local Business Market and develop strong business networks
Generate proposals to increase the value of the Commercial Banking portfolio, through identification of new markets and or product opportunities, including potential alliances.
Develop and agree stretching targets to maximise performance of Commercial Banking.
Understand and interpret local business trends and developments.
Lead the Business Bank and CIBW Product (eg VAF, Trade Cash) and Sector (eg Agri, Natural resources) capabilities as locally available
Be a role model leader and colleague.
Play a key role in the successful integration and alignment of local CIBW and Business Banking objectives by providing the direction and framework to leverage to best effect, both the organisational and people capabilities of the Business.
Lead the Commercial Banking team locally to best in Class standards, attracting the best available talent, drive performance and consequence management using reward practices to distinguish and reward top performers.
To be a contributing member of the local Bank’s Country Management committee (EXCO). Contribute as a senior leader to the successful overall running of the local Bank and as part of the Local Managing Directors team
The role holder will have accountability for the establishment and embedding of the values, behaviours and risk appetite that underpin the achievement of the Commercial Bank’s objectives.
The role holder will have specific accountability for delivering the economic profit performance of the Commercial Banking segment
Lead origination and execution of more complex/cross-group transactions.
Take major operating and investment decisions for the Commercial Banking and, as part of the Local CMC, wider SBU decisions, including:
Overall SBU planning and Budgeting
Prioritization
Resource allocation
The role holder will play a key role in generating, evaluating and making recommendations for local Commercial Banking to the Country Management Committee and where relevant to the wider Group.
Contribute and deliver to the improvement of the risk profile by delivering improved governance, risk management, controls and compliance requirements.
Qualifications,
The candidate should possess good working knowledge of banking and financial environment in emerging markets
Skills & Experience:
Banking and Government systems in Africa and/or other emerging markets
Professional accounting qualification i.e. ACCA, CIMA or Degree in relevant field
At least ten years experience in Commercial Banking in the emerging markets and that experience to bridge both Business and Corporate customer segments
Proven experience and expertise in credit risk analysis
Outstanding knowledge of Commercial banking products and services
Sound knowledge of strategy and planning processes
Product development knowledge and expertise
Outstanding knowledge of control and governance requirements and environment
Sound track record of relationship management
Highly developed coaching skills
Proven organizational skills
Proven ability in marketing techniques
Strong Solution, selling and negotiation skills
Excellent diagnostic skills and rigorous approach to problem solving
Excellent communication skills at all levels
Excellent comprehension skills to understand and interpret industry data and economic trends
Sound financial skills
Strong formal presentation skills to gain acceptance to solutions, both internally and externally
Team creation and co-ordination skills to mobilise and manage product specialists
Strong Leadership and team-working skills at senior executive level
Ability to think creatively and identify innovative solutions
Proven relationships within the commercial banking field in emerging markets
Commercial or related qualification would be an advantage
