Job Summary: The Internet Sub Editor will have the responsibility of compiling and editing relevant and appropriate breaking news and other content from MPL's news channels including the print, radio and digital, repackage it where necessary and post it on the website for online clients
Responsibilities:
Checks and corrects selected editorial copy, headlines and captions for facts, accuracy, taste, house-style, language use, clarity, details and objectivity
Edits copy to appropriate length, clarity and style without distorting facts or dispensing with salient points
Selects and edits pictures and write/re-writes appropriate captions to enhance their quality
Ensure that online content is written and presented in a format that meets web usability standards (i.e. usage of keywords, meta tags, alt tags for images, etc)
Ensures proper laying out of copy and pictures/graphics in web pages
Tailors stories to reflect interests of international audience
Responds to feedback, complaints and suggestions from online readers
Constantly updates the Website
Implementation of design and editorial content programming of interactive interface elements like chatrooms, Opinion Polls and forums
Editing Soundclips for online streaming
Structuring and maintaining an Audio Archive
Removes unnecessary details from copy and ensures that the stories are free of libel
Updates Online stories regularly
Qualifications,
The ideal Candidate for the MPL Internet Sub-editor job opportunity should possess a university Degree in Mass Communication or any related field from an accredited institution.
Possess a Diploma in Journalism
Skills and Experience:
Three or more years’ journalism experience and demonstrated writing and editing experience in a newsroom.
Excellent writing and editing skills, with good understanding of online writing and editing requirements such as the use of keywords, hyperlinks and navigation
Keen eye for detail, with excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.
Cutting-edge computer skills and experience in web programming, IT and multimedia
Deadline oriented
Demonstrated competency / experience with Tech Savvy
Extensive knowledge and understanding of social media
Skills in Search engine optimization
