Communication Manager - 1 position based at Country Office in Kampala
The position reports to the Country Director and is a member of the extended country management team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing strategic and technical leadership to Plan’s communication work in Uganda, ensuring that Country communication activities support Plan Uganda’s Country Strategic Plan, regional and global communication priorities. Plan Uganda is growing its programmes significantly and is increasing investment in advocacy, campaigning, programme communications and behaviour change communications. The Communications Manager will be responsible for leading development of a new Communications Strategy and establishment and supervision of a Communications Team at the country office that will handle all communications work for programmes covering 20 districts totaling $20 million annually.The selected candidate will travel frequently within the country.
Specific Responsibilities:
Develop, deliver & monitor Plan Uganda’s Communication Strategy taking into account global and emerging Country programs and campaign priorities
Orient senior staff/management on communication & media matters to enhance Plan Uganda‘s capacity to deliver high quality communication and media work
Represent Plan Uganda on a regional internal network for communication staff and ensure fruitful collaboration between Plan Uganda Communications teams and the Plan Global world
Provide leadership and supervision to Plan’s Country communication team
Collaborate with the communication and program teams to ensure quality media reporting around our work
Enhance Organizational visibility and profile by ensuring positive and regular reporting about Plan’s work in Uganda by Country, regional, and international media
Regularly update Plan Uganda’s Website with high quality articles
Ensure effective use of the social media to engage the public in Plan Uganda’s work and program & campaign goals.
Professionally support Global and Regional accolades and award initiatives to help profile Plan Uganda as a major contributor to Plan’s global winning team
Efficiently support fundraising efforts for Plan Uganda programmes
Train Plan Uganda staff on Plan’s Global Identity and communication guidelines and ensure they are consistently complied with.
Qualifications /Skills/ Experience:
Masters degree in communication, public relations or related field
At least 5 years of relevant experience in a dynamic organization
In-depth knowledge of current communications issues and trends, particularly in the humanitarian sector
Good knowledge of how the media and journalists work nationally
Demonstrated experience of working as a communication manager
Proven experience to develop and implement communication and media advocacy strategies
Good understanding of child rights and development work
Exceptional conceptual and strategic thinking skills
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with colleagues in different departments
Fluency in English and very good working knowledge of local languages spoken in Uganda
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation and public speaking
Ability to prioritize, multitask and demonstrate high levels of customer orientation
Create strong sense of purpose within own part of the business and with stakeholders
Holds self and others to account to deliver on agreed goals and standards of behaviour.
Willing to have frequent travels within the country.
